Yes I did Jon-Pop

It’s hilarious and what prompted me to post.

I can still picture myself in dungarees, a ball-peen hammer in hand pounding off old gray paint, bucket of new gray paint and paintbrush.
I always liked the food though but maybe I’m just a human garbage disposal.

It appears we are working on a weapon that doesn't take any gun powder. Yet it packs 40 megajoules of muzzle energy.

I was in the Army for three years, Patriot Missile Crew Member. Not as cool as it sounds, I just drove a truck and put the system where it needed to be, made sure the truck and the system didn't have anything wrong with them, and if they did notified the right people to fix them In for three years, was stationed at ROB(Rhein Ordinance Barracks) in Kaiserslautern, Germany, met my husband there, he is a Mechanic for the Army. He's been in for a little over 12 years now(had an almost 2 year break after being a recruiter for app. 3 years, but rejoined last July). We are currently in Alaska, he is getting deployed in a couple of months, he'll be gone for 12-15 months Don't know where we will go after this, but I'm hoping for somewhere in Kentucky, or Colorado

For those who are unaware, at all military theaters, the National Anthem is
played before every movie.

From a Chaplain in Iraq:
I recently attended a showing of 'Superman 3,' here at LSA Anaconda. We have
a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services and other
large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped
to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was
going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through The National
Anthem the music stopped.

Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in
the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude
comments; and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that
is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place.

Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed
forward. The music started again. The Soldiers continued to quietly stand at
attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped.
What would you expect to happen? Even here I would imagine laughter, as
everyone would finally sit down and expect the movie to start. But here, you
could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier continued to stand at attention.

Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was
filled with the voices of a thousand soldiers, finishing where the recording
left off: 'And the rockets red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof
through the night, That our flag was still there. Oh, say does that Star -
Spangled Banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the
brave.'

It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq. I wanted you to
know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here. Remember them as they fight
for you! Pass this along as a reminder to others to be ever in prayer for
all our soldiers serving us here at home and abroad. For many have already
paid the ultimate price.

Written by Chaplain Jim Higgins LSA Anaconda. He is at the Balad Airport in
Iraq, north of Bagdad.

Be THANKSFUL you're sitting in your 'safe' office or home reading this AND
yet we still have VERY BRAVE young men and women fighting half way across
the world for YOU AND ME!

Cool post Jon,

Civilians rarely grasp the reality of what Military personnel have to deal with on a daily basis.
I was, and supported the troops in "The Gulf"......of Tonkin.

cheers

I sat home and watched those Hueys being tossed overboard and shuddered.
Spent a lot of hours in those. Such a waste.

I feel like an intruder posting on this thread, but this can`t be said enough. Thanks to all of you (active and retired) for your sacrifice and service. On this 4 th we can sit back with our families and friends because of people like you and your commitment to our freedom and way of life. For what it is worth (not much) The stroke was PDQ`d at the MEPS station during the first Gulf War because of an injury from a car wreck. I never have been able to put that behind me. GOD bless you all, and the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

former Sergeant in the Marine Corps here.

Semper Fidelis.

You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance, that they are the most ferocious fighters on earth- and the amusing thing about it is that they are.
Father Kevin Keaney
1st Marine Division Chaplain
Korean War

The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945

"So they've got us surrounded, good! Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards won't get away this time!"
CHESTY PULLER, USMC

"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem."
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN, 1985

"Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans,
because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean,
or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and
tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they
always go for the throat."
-RAdm. "Jay" R. Stark, US Navy; 10 November 1995.

"Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it was some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshipping their Commandant almost as if he was a god, and making weird animal noises like a band of savages. They'll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest SOB's I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man's normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and , generally speaking, of the United States Marines I've come in contact with, are the most professional soldiers and the finest men I have had the pleasure to meet."
~ An Anonymous Canadian Citizen

WE STOLE THE EAGLE FROM THE AIR FORCE, THE ANCHOR FROM THE NAVY AND THE ROPE FROM THE ARMY.
ON THE SEVENTH DAY WHILE GOD RESTED, WE OVERRAN HIS PERIMETER, STOLE THE GLOBE AND WE'VE BEEN RUNNING THE WHOLE SHOW EVER SINCE.

Sorry for all the quotes, just still proud as hell to be a Marine.

SOME OF US WILL UNDERSTAND THIS MORE THAN OTHERS~!GOD ~ COUNTRY ~ HONOR
I just wanted to get the day over with and...........

go down to Smokey's for a few cold ones.

Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 1655.

Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day.

Full dress was hot in the August sun.

Oklahoma summertime was as bad as ever --

the heat and humidity at the same level -- both too high.

I saw the car pull into the drive,

'69 or '70 model Cadillac Deville, looked factory-new.

It pulled into the parking lot at a snail's pace .

An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed.

She had a cane and a sheaf of flowers,

about four or five bunches as best I could tell.

I couldn't help myself.

The thought came unwanted,

and left a slightly bitter taste:

'She's going to spend an hour,

and for this old soldier...my hip hurts like hell

and I'm ready to get out of here right now!'

But for this day my duty was to assist anyone coming in.

Kevin would lock the 'In' gate and if....

I could just hurry the old biddy along ,

we might make the last half of happy hour at Smokey's.

I broke Post Attention.

My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step

and the pain went up a notch.

I must have made a real military sight;

middle-aged man with a small pot-gut and half a limp,

in Marine Full Dress Uniform, which had lost its razor

crease about 30 minutes after I began the watch...

at the cemetery.

I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk.

She looked up at me with an old woman's squint.

'Ma'am may I assist you in any way?'

She took long enough to answer.

'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers?

I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.'

'My pleasure Ma'am.'

Well, it wasn't too much of a lie.

She looked again.

'Marine, where were you stationed?'

' Vietnam , Ma'am.

Ground-pounder. '69 to '71.'

She looked at me closer.

'Wounded in action, I see.

Well done, Marine, I'll be as quick as I can.'

I lied a little bigger, 'No hurry, Ma'am.'

She smiled............. and winked at me.

'Son, I'm 85-years old and I can tell a lie from a long way off.

Let's get this done, might be the last time I can do this.

My name's Joanne Wieserman, and I've a few Marines

I'd like to see one more time.'

'Yes, Ma'am,
At your service.'

She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone.

She picked one of the bunches out of my arm

and laid it on top of the stone.

She murmured something I couldn't quite make out.

The name on the marble was;

Donald S. Davidson, USMC, France 1918.

She turned away and made a straight line for the

World War II section, stopping at one stone.

I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek.

She put a bunch on a stone;

the name was; Stephen X. Davidson, USMC, 1943.

She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone;

Stanley J. Wieserman USMC , 1944.

She paused for a second, 'Two more, son, and we'll be done'

I almost didn't say anything, but, 'Yes, Ma'am, Take your time.'

She looked confused.
'Where's the Vietnam section, son?

I seem to have lost my way.'

I pointed with my chin. 'That way, Ma'am.'

'Oh!' she chuckled quietly.

'Son, me and old age ain't too friendly.'

She headed down the walk I'd pointed at.

She stopped at a couple of stones before

she found the ones she wanted.

She placed a bunch on Larry Wieserman USMC, 1968,

and the last one on Darrel Wieserman USMC, 1970.

She stood there and murmured a few words......

I still couldn't make out.

'OK, son , I'm finished.

Get me back to my car and you can go home.'

'Yes, Ma'am.
If I may ask, were those your kinfolk ?'

She paused.

'Yes, Donald Davidson was my father;

Stephen was my uncle;

Stanley was my husband;

Larry and Darrel were our sons.

All killed in action, all Marines.'

She stopped, whether she had finished, or couldn't finish,

I just don't know.

She made her way to her car, slowly, and painfully.

I waited for a polite distance to come between us.......

and then double-timed it over to Kevin waiting by the car.

'Get to the 'Out'-gate QUICK~!,
I have something I've JUSTgot to do.'

Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him.

He broke the rules to get us there down the service road.

We beat her.

She hadn't made it around the rotunda yet.

'Kevin............ stand to attention next to the gate post.

Follow my lead.'

I humped it across the drive to the other post.

When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges

and began the short straight traverse to the gate,

I called in my best gunny's voice: 'TehenHut! Present Haaaarms!'

I have to hand it to Kevin, he never blinked an eye;

full dress attention and a salute that would make his DI proud.

She drove through that gate with two old worn-out soldiers

giving her a send off she deserved, for service rendered to

her country, and for knowing Duty, Honor and Sacrifice

I am not quite sure, but I think I saw............

a BIG salute returned from that Cadillac!

Instead of 'The End'... just think of 'Taps'.

As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer:

'Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe,

whether they serve at home or overseas.

Hold them in Your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.'

Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before,

in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy.

'In God We Trust!'

Sorry about your monitor, it made mine blurry too!
