The JonBenet thread was really popular so Jen and I thought it would be a good idea to have a current events thread. Talk about anything happening, but be careful when talking about politics. People tend to be really opinionated and we don't want any serious fights.

OK, well, I learned today from my sister that Gov. Shwarzenegger has a bill on his desk which when signed will ban the use of cell phones while driving. Wouldn't that be interesting??? Personally, I say go for it!

I think that would be a ridiculous law... what's next, a law to ban drinking sodas while driving?? how about banning loud music while driving?? where does it end?

Doubling the penalties for violations if the violation happened while the person was using his/her cell or mandating the use of hands-free sets would make more sense... completely banning cell phone use while driving is short of nazi'ism.

I can see Shwarzenegger signing it too... after all, he is a liberal dressed in republican clothing.

I agree. As much as I hate idiots driving while talking on their cell phones, sometimes I get a call while driving. I don't make my own calls while driving and I keep my eyes wide open for cops if I am using it. Giving people incentive to avoid talking on phones seems more practical and more easily enforced.

for a while now. There are still many people who still do it.
i don't know how much the fines are though I would guess around $75.00 + court costs.

I agree with what some of ya'll wrote about talking on the cell phone while driving. The problem is these high school fuckers that think just because they have a damn drivers license they are hot shit. They cant drive using both fucking hands much less with a phone in there ear. Ive been in too many close calls with these assholes almost wrecking into me. And if I had to guess high school kids cant drive worth a shit irregardless of what state they are from.

Studly, it's not just high school kids that are doing this. EVERYONE does it. Myself included. I spend way too much time on the phone while I'm driving. And, as strict as Washington state is about speed laws, I'm surprised they haven't initiated a ban against cell phone usage while driving. Washington has some great attributes and some serious negatives!!!

Well, I am on my phone all fucking day and will continue to be. If they pass a law banning it, I will just get a ticket. I do use an ear piece which keeps you hands free, but I would use it without the ear piece if I had too. My job requires that I be on the phone.

Some people can't drive for shit while using a cell phone. Examples are people that drive 10 miles under the speed limit because they are using one, and the one's that are trying to dial a number for 5 minutes and are all over the road at the same time because of the phone. There are some studies that show that drunks drive better than people driving using cell phones. Why not just make a new law stating that if you plan on driving while using a cell phone then you must pass a driving test with a cell phone to prove that you can do so and after you pass the test you get a window type sticker for proof. That way you will weed out all of the D.A.s that can't do the 2 things at once!

Here in the UK its allready banned. Coming from a racing background of both bikes proffesionally and rally driving / sprint tests as a hobby, in my opinion you are not in control of your car if you are holding a phone. The accident rate involving driving/phones over here has dropped dramatically. The modern total hands free kits are good and let you keep your hands on the wheel where they are supposed to be.

This is a problem for me also. I'm on my phone all the time while driving .........and I'll admit, I don't like it, but I've gotten so used to it that I don't think twice about it anymore. I really dig the total hands free type phones with those really cool little ear pieces.......sweet! I'll probably invest in one of those setups when I move back to the OC. Washington hasn't passed a law like that yet, but I'm waiting. Hell, it's hard enough for me to stick to driving 60 mph on the freeways up there let alone not using a cell phone while driving.

Being a former off road racer, I still practice total concentration when I am on the road. I carry a cell phone for really important calls but since I don't like anything stuck in my ear, I clip the phone to the dash cover, turn it on to speaker and when I need to answer a call or make one, I just flip it open and talk as though I have a passenger in the truck with me. This keeps my hands free and I still remain in total control.

Whats really funny is that it wasnt that many years ago when we didnt even have the damn cell phones. Now people cant even go take a piss with out having the damn thing stuck in there ear.

Yeah, I read about that last night. You can anticipate lots of people now saying, "At least he died doing what he loved." I hate it when people say that. I like doing lots of things, but I don't want or expect to die doing them.

I almost spit my coffee out this morning when I read about this. That stingray must have been pissed off or felt threatened. Poor guy. And he has two little ones too!! Sucks..........

Steve, had one of my all time favorite TV shows ever. I mean the guy was good at what he did (risk taking) and he always seemed to get out of dirty situations. It made me a little sad to hear that steve is dead. I cant imagine how his wife and children feel. I always thought he would probably die in some sort of crazy adventure, but not so soon.

Well on a happier note, my birthday is today!!!! Sept 5th. SiK that would probably be the worst way to die!!!
