| 88, have you seen the workout that Ben Wallace does from the NBA? My brother (who's into the free weights and gaining mass in his workouts) told me about a news or video clip he watched and the shit was insane! He goes crazy and completely against what everyone that I know does, but he's unreal. I'd be too scared to hurt myself doing some workout like that, but thought I'd see if you guys knew about him? |

| Sonic, you are right about the tech part of a lift. Same goes for gaining quality muscle. If you dont perform the exercise properly then you will not gain the muscle you want, or strength for that matter.
Slick, I've never seen Ben's workout. How does he go against what everyone knows?? If you have a link or something that would be great.....yeeaaah, that'll be grreaat. ( office space ) Anyshit, I'd like to see it.

| If some of ya'll want extra size then do more reps. Like 5-6 sets of 12-15 reps. If your after strength then you need to do less reps but with more weight.
The key to having a great bench is to have strong shoulders. You can have huge arms but if your shoulders are not very strong then you wont have a great bench. Im at the point where I think a good shoulder routine is more important on a regular basis than benching twice a week. Of course Im talking about if your doing a powerlifting routine. You have to get those shoulders in good condition to be able to handle a heavy bench.

| 88, I looked around via "Google" but couldn't find anything good related to his workout (just my brother's funny explanation of how crazy it was)! I'll send him an email and see if he's got something? If anything, it will be worth a laugh, although I wouldn't laugh at Mr. Wallace in person. :)
I've heard (and friends who powerlift have told me this) that to improve your bench, you should increase your back routine (because that's the foundation of your primary bench). Then again, who knows for sure? I always say, whatever works for that person, stick with it! Cheers... |

Stop and think about it if your doing strict benches your back isnt supposed to leave the bench. So how in the hell are your back muscles gonna help you? Naw man to have a great bench you do those shoulder exercises like I said and your bench will improve a whole lot. Militarys and doing dumbells straight out from your side and straight in front of you will strengthen your shoulders over a period of time.

| A friend of mine completely disagreed because a strong foundation is where you get your core strength from and your back is a big part of that. Just think about how small your shoulder muscles are compared to your back?
Then again, this came from a guy who benched over 400pds with ease, so I kind of take his word on it, especially seeing that he was only 185pds! I've personally never heard anyone say to work on your shoulders for an increase in bench marks, but who knows?
I gave up the bench, so to me it really doesn't matter what works in the free weight world. I'm sticking with the pushups and bonin. :) |

| I'm with stud on this... there is very little back work being done when benching but ALOT of shoulder and tricep is used as they support and complement pushing movements (back muscles are pulling muscles). Having a strong back certainly couldn't hurt your bench press, but i seriously doubt that back work will add to your bench strength the way that triceps and shoulders would.
How much he benches is really irrevelent in this discussion... he may simply be a natural lifter that even if he ate dog crap he would still get stronger. What we have to do is look at body mechanics... |

I usually do 4-6 sets of seated militarys starting at 225 and going up to 275. Im not saying anything about your buddy but you have to understand that some guys are real damn secretive about what they do because they dont want anybody to outdo them so they sometimes will tell somebody a line of shit. Listen long enough and youll hear somebody say doing a bunch of calf work will give you a good bench.

| Shoulders: This is probably one of the muscles most people use to benchpress. Why? Because of the grip and the way their elbows are positioned. Having a strong set of front deltoids is one of the true reasons why anyone can press alot of weight. When you say that your friend says "back" has alot to do with your bench, then he's obviously retarded. The back is a stablilizer, and dosent play a major role in whether you can push up a lot of weight. The only place where "back" really comes into the press, is on the negative portion of the movement (Latissimus dorsi). So Soulders, Chest, Tri's are your three main muscles for a good bench.

It sounded like he knew what the hell he was talking about, but the next time I talk to him I'll be talking all kinds of shit (even though I can't bench that much weight, I'll out pull-up, push-up, dip, run, swim and cycle his ass anyday!)
Damn, all you guys look at 3-45pd plates on each side of the bar and say "yea, I'm going to start warming up"! Hell, I look at 315pm on the bench like "yea, I did that years ago, but I'll max out at 250-275 if I'm lucky these days and then won't be able to move the next day with a blown out shoulder or something.
Anyway, thanks for the good feedback. The fitness threads have been great so far and hopefully we'll keep the good info rolling? |

Gotta love the Internet for some of that I guess. |

Some peopl ejust dont want you to know exactly what they are doing in any kind of a workout.

| Ronnie Coleman, Is a good example of witholding information. He dosent discuss his diet, supplaments (except for BSN products ), His steroid mixture is sought after by the other pro's. Now I can see alot of reason to hide some secrets, but the fact is, is that he was scared to lose his streak! AND HE DID!!! Congrats JAY!!
