Über's back

For those of you who didn't know, my computer's hard drive died on me on Tuesday of this week and I wasn't able to log on from my own computer until today. Now I have a new hard drive installed and I'm trying to get things working again. I just hope I didn't lose everything.

I went through that a few months ago lost everything. I ordered a new one from Dell and intalled it myself, had to talk to tech support "via chat" though.
I have since used a usb memory key to back up everything I think is important, for the money they are priceless. I think it cost me around $25.00.

I just got my old drive running again. It appears virtually everything is gone.

Sorry to hear this buddy. I lost everything when I had that lightning strike hit my power grid last year. Really sucks. If you need me to send you links or addresses to help fill in the gaps, let me know. Plus, I have alot of your stuff you sent me by e-mail, stored.

Correction: I did lose everything, not just virtually everthing. Damnit. Yeah, if you could send me that stuff it would be much appreciated JP.

I didn't do anything. Hard drives just die for no reason sometimes. It was more than 4 years old. My roommate has had 2 drives crap out on him.

What, if anything, do you use to back your system up with?
I just burn everything to a cd and try to keep as much junk of my hard drive as possible.

That was my mistake. I got lazy and didn't back it up. My roommate admits he doesn't back stuff up either. I have a DVD burner so I have no excuses.

Memory key is smaller, easier to use, it can hold a shit load of stuff, I wouldn't be without one. It is much better than disc.

They don't hold gigs upon gigs upon gigs of data. I have one and it has more memory than most on the market.

The drive may still be OK, but you might not be able to boot from it, if it's your single drive. Try to plug it in (assuming you're running Windows) as a second drive on the same ribbon cable that you replaced with your new drive and see if you can see it? This is a common way to manually get the files off a failed boot drive.
Let me know if that makes sense and/or works?

My roommate looked at some of the diagnostic information and said, "Yeah, you had a massive failure."

I am sorry to hear what happened Uber. Once I used system restore from accessories and system tools and it took me back to something strange I had downloaded and after I removed it things came to normal - but I am no computer geek and I am sure you must have already tried it.

System restore only works as long as the hard drive itself works. That was my problem. Sometimes a stray particle of dust gets in the casing and fucks everything up.
