| Shoulder Injury Back in Mid-March I hurt what I think is my rotator cuff using a pec-deck fly machine. It was really painful for the first 2 weeks or so and then the pain subsided. I thought I was in the clear but here it is at the end of April and there is still a dull pain after work-outs.
I've decided to take this injury more seriously and cut back on any work-out that requires the shoulder. I plan on omitting shoulder exercises completely and do light Bench Presses. I can continue with things like squats, biceps, triceps and some back exercises. I bought some glucosamine/chondroitin today. I think this is a ligament or tendon injury. Doesn't seem to be torn otherwise I think I'd be in much more pain that I am. I can still work-out with it and have been doing so since the injury but its just not healing all the way.
Anybody have any ideas or suggestions about this sort of thing? |

| Have you seen a Doctor? These kinds of problems can and will get worse if they aren't delt with. |

| If you can lift your arm, you didn't tear your rotator cuff, I know, I'm going through a slight tear right now.

Just do the physical therapy until the therapist gives you the OK for strength training. http://www.thera-band.com/resistive.html

| Loki- No, I havn't seen a Dr. I want to try some different things on my own before seeing someone. It is not a debilitating injury right now. I'm able to do my shoulder work-out etc. and it hurts little to not at all to use it. It just doesn't heal all the way. I'm going to try to rest it; which I havn't done up to now. Hopefully that will help it heal.
JP- I can lift my arm with no pain. The pain comes at weird times, certain motions will remind me I have an injury.
Betterman- Thanks for the link. In fact a fellow at the gym showed me how to use the bands so after a week or two of not using the joint I would like to use the bands to recover.
I'm going to give it a month of serious attention and see if its gets better. If can't seem to heal it I'll eventually see someone.
Thanks for you reponses guys |

Thanks for you reponses guys | I would wager, if you seen the doctor he would give you the same prognosis. The therapist is the key for recovery. Find a good therapist. Preferably, female. She'll have that shoulder working in no time. The reason your shoulder hurts is it can't support it's own weight. My 17 year old had the same symptoms from either football or the excessive dumbbells he was lifting while rotating in the upstroke. FYI

| ^interesting. Yes, a female therapist may be needed... recovery or not.
This is an interesting injury because sometimes, like this morning, there is no pain. The pain comes at the weirdest times like when I'm slightly tugging on something with my thumb and index finger.
I feel confident with a some proper rest and the addition of the Glucosamine I will recover. I hope. |

| Sounds more like an inflamed tendon to me. Ibuprofen, rest, alternate hot and cold compress'.

| ^I believe you're right. I've been icing it everyday and it is getting better. I still can't load weight on it at the gym but there is no pain with everyday tasks. |

| Ok, I have had a similar injury not too long ago from doing heavy ass bench presses. I tired to do another rep and go for a good long negative.... and WHAMO! Anyway, it was killing me for 4 friggen months and the pain would persist whenever I did flat bench, but never on incline. So I cut out all presses to save my future in bodybuilding and shot-put.
I decided to take my friends advice after going to the doctor and getting zero help with the situation and buy some Cissus ( a plant sterol ), that strengthens and repairs tendons and joints. After my second day of 1400mg I had no pain at all. It was amazing! This may not work for everyone, but is worth a try.
By the way. I was taking an anti-inflammatory that was not working, so I stopped taking it a week before I started using cissus.

| BB,
If your injury persists let me know. I am dating an ATC and she can help out tremendously. Following a shoulder operation, I am back 100% thanks to her. By no means is she a know-it-all, but she is really good, and I want to see you at 100% as soon as possible.
BTW, 88man has a good tip, if you want to, I would follow it. Another option would be glucosamine, which basically does the same thing.
Hopefully in the short and easy end, you just need some rest, and some light rehab exercises, which can help strengthen your entire shoulder area. I am really hoping it is just an overuse injury, and does not require and orthopod. You are probably just like the rest of us and hate taking unscheduled time out of the gym. Good luck to you my friend and please keep us updated.

| I trashed my shoulder years ago doing a heavy bench press workout and it took a good 3 months to heal. The bad thing was that it was 8 days before I was set to go to basic training. I'm glad the Air Force has the easiest basic training, but it still hurt like hell doing push ups, pull ups, etc. Anyway, after all that was done I started doing very light workouts in tech school (about 8 weeks after my injury) and it was several weeks later where I slowly noticed that I could go back to a regular workout. Overall, I was nervous for a total of about 6 months, until I truly forgot about it the occasional movement that hurt just a bit. Take it easy and hopefully time will do its job...
Oh yea, I forgot to mention that I've not done any heavy bench presses since then! Nor have I eaten steamers, since I got food poisoning years ago. |

| Great responses guys. I do believe its an inflamed tendon, overuse injury. I have not done any presses or shoulder work for the last month. Just yesterday I did a light shoulder press and some tubing work. Not quite ready for the flat bench press but will try some chest work next week. |

| I'm actually going through a a shoulder injury now... i've had this shoulder pain for a long time and it's gotten to the point where i just can't train anymore. I've lost over an inch on both arms from the lack of working out... turns out i have rotator cuff tendonitis. The pain is only felt on external rotationof the rotator cuff. This is much better than a ligament injury.
What you need to do is isolate where the injury is... you should probably see a chiropractor or an orthopedic doctor. My experience has been that chiropractors are better suited to isolating the injury than most family practice doctors. What i typically do with injuries (depending on pain/severity) is to see a chiropractor to isolate the injury, once the injury has been isolated and routine therapy doesn't resolve the pain, i then go to my doctor for a reference to an orthopedist. I do this because i can get the injury looked at, diagnosed, and begin therapy quicker than going to a family practice doctor.
You can use hot/cold therapy using the 1-2-3 method and an NSAID like Ibuprofin. The 1-2-3 method is 10 minutes hot pack, 20 minutes cold pack, and 30 minutes of nothing. Do this several times everyday. Ibuprofin will help with the pain. If you take normal recommended dosages (200mg), it will help with the pain but unfortunately it's not enough to relieve the inflamation. Typical theraputic doses for anti-inflamatory effects is ~600mg for Ibuprofin. |

| ^interesting info on the theraputic doses of nsaids. I don't like to take them unless the pain is too bad but it seems the icing did the job as far as reducing inflamation. |

| Hey brother dogg. I too am going through a shoulder injury. My Orthapedic Dr. thinks it's a slight tear to the rotator cuff in my left shoulder. I had an MRI yesterday and go back to the Dr. on the 8th. Makes it a real bitch to try and sleep. Had this going on for over 4 months.
He has me on Vicidon and Motrin, but I think Aleve works the best.

| Just got back from the Dr. We went over the MRI pictures and found that the tear was a little worse then he thought. It sure is weird looking at the inside of yourself, lot's of shit in there, especially with the thin slices of an MRI.
Some parts of the cuff are just hanging by a thread and it is torn in 4 other places. He recommends surgery but at this time with having to care for my wife, it's just not an option. He said I'd be a one armed man for 5-6 months after surgery. Funny thing about an injury like this, it won't heal itself. I've hurt myself in many ways over my life and the injuries heal over time but not this one.
He gave me around 10 exercises to do to try and strengthen the area, but he said I am very susceptible to tearing it compleatly. He also said, if I can just live with the pain, at this time and don't do any more damage to the cuff, maybe we can schedule surgery sometime in the fall. Be careful how you lift, this is one you can't come back from. JP

| I agree 100% Jonpop. With the exception of maybe fucking up a dick ligament I cant think of anything worse than a rotator cuff injury. Fucked mine up about 6 years ago and couldnt lift any weights for several months. Painful as hell to lift my arm over my head. I could lift it straight out with no pain but once I started going over my head it would hurt. I feel for you JonPop I know this aint like jamming your damn finger.

| Knock on wood, I haven't had any shoulder injuries and from what I've read here, I'll pass. Sounds too fucked up for me.
Although, I did have a problem with my right shoulder. For several months, actually, probably nearly a year now, it hurt to do certain exercises at the gym............in particular dips...........hurt like hell and I thought I had torn my rotator cuff. Guess I didn't because none of the symptoms or extreme pain I've read about here I had. I mean it hurt, but it wasn't terrible.
Now, for some strange reason, the pain has disappeared and I can do dips again.............bizaar. Might have been tendonitis??

| Jeez, I feel like I should've never started this thread! Sorry to hear about everyones bad shoulders. Mine is slowly recovering and I thought I could work out with it, which I did, but its still not all there. Needs more rest.
JP, a friend of mine recently had rotator cuff surgery. She torn hers completely and is the same age as you. She sounds pretty optimistic at this point. Good luck to you. |

| Thanks, bozo. Just don't have time for that right now. Just learning a new way to do things, the way I lift, stretch, and reach.
I think I tore my cuff by jelqing my huge dick, it's just too heavy.
