Well thank you all for your replies, however none of you attempeted to answer the question.

The question wasn't, what exercise is aerobic. It is what level of performance should be reasonable for an average 40 something.
I remember asking a question, when I was younger and doing a little crosstraining in the pool. I had done 20laps (1km) in 20 min and thought this was ok for a none swimmer. Well I got everyone and his dog, telling me how hopeless that was and I should do 20laps in under 10 min. Well it was only later I found out a world class swimmer would be having a good day to do this.
Anyway, I have come to the thought, if I can jog along for 20min a bit faster than I can now, I will be happy.

Btw everyone has assumed that I am fat and I am not --bald yes, middle aged yes, fat no.
